After nearly a decade of dedication to the program, Justine Johnson is officially stepping into a new role as Head Coach of the Girls Varsity Softball team. The announcement came Monday morning from Athletic Director Brandon Smith, who praised Johnson’s leadership, commitment to student-athletes, and years of service as the program’s junior varsity coach. “Coach Johnson has been an important part of our softball program for years,” Smith said. “She understands the culture, the expectations, and what it means to represent Jefferson softball. This is a well-earned opportunity.” Johnson spent the last seven seasons leading the JV program, where she became known for developing young talent, building confidence in players, and helping create one of the strongest softball pipelines in the conference. Under her leadership, the JV team posted an impressive 112-38 overall record and produced multiple athletes who later earned all-conference honors at the varsity level. Players and parents alike describe Johnson as passionate, supportive, and fiercely competitive. “She pushes everyone to be better, but she also genuinely cares about every player,” senior catcher Stacey Nuveman said. “A lot of us have played for Coach Johnson since freshman year, so seeing her become head coach is really exciting.” Johnson takes over the varsity program following the retirement of longtime head coach Melissa Grant, who led the Tigers for 15 seasons. For Johnson, the opportunity is both exciting and emotional. “This program means so much to me,” Johnson said during her introductory press conference. “I’ve been lucky enough to coach so many incredible athletes over the years, and I’m honored to now lead the varsity program..” Johnson says her focus moving forward will be creating a competitive culture centered around accountability, energy, and teamwork. “We want to play fast, aggressive softball and create an environment where players feel confident and supported,” she said. “The goal is to compete for championships while continuing to grow these athletes on and off the field.” The team is coming off a 21-8 season and return several key starters heading into next spring. With a familiar face now leading the program, excitement around softball is already building for the future.
